It helps you build cutting-edge, scalable applications that can drive your business growth while keeping costs in control. It always comes with a new way to help you handle multiple users while maintaining the application running speed without spending much. It offers several tools to manage your budget and help you with your costs as you use it.

Read How Cloud Companies Are Driving Value in 2023.

Importance of Cost Optimization with AWS

AWS cost optimization helps in utilizing cloud resources efficiently without unnecessary expenses. You are only charged for what you use, which helps control costs.

So, an effective AWS cost optimization can help you save money by identifying overused resources, improving resource allocation, and examining usage trends. Neglecting AWS Cost Optimization can lead to raised expenses, and waste of resources, resulting in decreased profits.

Thus, AWS cost management is a strategic approach to raise your overall business profitability, let’s know about it:

Maximizing Cost Saving

AWS cost optimization provides economic benefits and helps identify cost-effective solutions such as Reserved Instances and Saving Plans. It allows you to save money by rightsizing instances like Amazon EC2 with low utilization. You can uncover architectural, operational, and financial opportunities for additional savings.

Simplifying Compliance and Maintenance

Compliance and maintenance are time-consuming but essential. AWS cost optimization simplifies these tasks by using resource and cost-allocation tagging. Tagging makes it easier to track and manage resources and expenses, reducing concerns about cloud operations, maintenance, and security monitoring. With fewer compliance and maintenance headaches, you can focus on more critical tasks and strategic initiatives.

Boosting Business Growth

AWS cost optimization improves operational efficiency and offers cost-saving opportunities, freeing up time and money for business growth. With optimized costs, businesses can prioritize high-impact initiatives, develop better strategies, and foster innovation. AWS cost optimization allows you to scale resources according to demand, ensuring your business is always ready to grow.

AWS Pricing Models: The central part of AWS Cost Optimization

AWS offers various pricing models. These pricing models can help you optimize costs according to your specific business models and needs. You can utilize these pricing models while planning your cloud budget.

On-demand pricing

The on-demand pricing model allows you to pay based on the utilization of cloud resources. You can pay per hour or second based on actual usage of the resources.

Benefits: This pricing model lets you use instances immediately without paying in advance. You can instantly stop using these instances whenever you want, and you will be charged only for the duration they were used.

Ideal For: This option is great for new users on AWS and to handle unpredictable tasks on the cloud.

Savings Plans

This pricing model offers discounted prices in return for your commitment to using AWS each hour daily for the long term.

Benefits: This offers a big discount on long-term subscriptions.

Ideal For: This is ideal for business users who regularly use AWS services and want to save money.

Reserved Instances

Reserved Instances (RIs) offer significant savings compared to on-demand pricing by committing to use AWS resources for a one or three-year term.

Benefits: It provides more predictable monthly costs for budgeting and forecasting.

Ideal For: It is a cost-effective choice for businesses with consistent and predictable workloads.

Spot Instances

Spot Instances offer massive cost savings of up to 90%, making them perfect for quickly scaling your infrastructure. However, they can be interrupted by AWS with just a two-minute warning. This warning lets applications complete tasks or save progress before termination, minimizing disruptions.

Benefits: It is helpful in quickly scaling business infrastructure at the lowest cost.

Ideal For: It is perfect for businesses with fault-tolerant applications that can handle interruptions and where interruptions have minimal impact on productivity.

Dedicated Hosts

With Dedicated Hosts, you rent an entire physical server for your private use, freeing you from administrative tasks. Amazon takes care of hardware maintenance and cleaning, offering enhanced security and reliability, though this model is typically more expensive and suited for enterprises.

Benefits: This is highly secure and reliable.

Ideal For: This is an ideal choice for businesses needing to meet strict compliance and security standards and having enough budget.

Implementation of Design Principles for AWS Cost Optimization

Consider these five design principles to effectively optimize cost on AWS:

Leverage Cloud Financial Management:

Investing in Cloud Financial Management is essential for achieving financial success in the cloud. Allocate time and resources to develop capabilities in this area, much like investing in security or operations. Prioritize building knowledge, creating effective programs, and establishing robust processes and resources to manage cloud usage efficiently. This investment allows your organization to become more cost-effective and maximize the value of your cloud investments.

Pay for What You Use:

Utilize this model to ensure you only pay for what you have actively utilized. This flexible approach allows you to adjust usage based on business needs. For instance, development and test environments often run only during business hours. By stopping these resources when they are not in use, you can save up to 75% in costs compared to running them 24/7.

Stop Spending on Data Center Operations:

AWS handles the data center operations such as stacking, racking, and powering servers. They also manage operating systems and applications through their managed services. By using managed services, you can eliminate the operational burden of managing operating systems and applications. This allows you to focus more on your customers and core business projects rather than IT infrastructure.

Monitor Overall Efficiency:

Keep an eye on how efficiently your AWS workloads are running by comparing your spending to the profits you’re making. Regular monitoring helps you find ways to cut costs and use resources wisely to boost financial performance. This measurement helps you make informed decisions about optimizing your AWS resources.

Analyze and Attribute Expenditure:

The cloud makes it easy to see the costs and usage of different workloads. This allows you to accurately assign IT costs to specific revenue streams and workload owners. By tracking ROI and showing workload owners their resource usage, you can optimize resources more efficiently and reduce overall costs.

AWS Cost Management Tools

Amazon offers a wide range of free tools to help you manage and optimize costs. Let’s learn about these cost-cutting tools to manage data, make decisions, and compose automated rules to save you money.

AWS Cost Explorer

AWS Cost Explorer is a free tool that gives you a clear view of your AWS expenses and usage. It helps you visualize your spending patterns over time, spot cost trends, and dive into specific resources to understand where your money is going.

Amazon Cloud Watch

Amazon CloudWatch allows you to set alarms based on various metrics from your AWS services. It’s great for cost optimization, like setting an alert when an EC2 instance’s usage drops below 30%, so you can investigate and adjust the instance size or combine workloads to save money.

AWS Trusted Advisor

AWS Trusted Advisor offers recommendations to help you save money, improve security, and boost performance. It uses best practices to identify areas where you can cut costs or enhance the efficiency of your AWS resources.

AWS Budgets

AWS Budgets lets you create custom spending limits for your AWS account. You can set budgets for specific resources, services, or your entire account, and you’ll receive alerts if your spending exceeds these limits, allowing you to manage your costs effectively.

AWS Pricing Calculator

The AWS Pricing Calculator helps you estimate costs before choosing a service. It’s useful for planning your budget and identifying cost-saving opportunities, especially if you’re new to AWS. It provides clear insights into expected expenses for your planned services.

At Deqode, we specialize in cloud cost optimization, helping companies achieve significant savings while maintaining top-tier performance. Our tailored approach ensures efficient cloud financial management, precise cost attribution, and optimal resource allocation. By adopting a multi-cloud strategy, like our Chainlake Cloud Solution, we minimize expenses related to computing, storage, and networking. Our solutions are designed to handle high data volumes and complex operations, reducing overall costs by up to 85%.

Best Practices for AWS Cost Optimization

Managing AWS costs requires smart planning and effective resource management. To make sure you are making a productive investment in AWS, follow these best practices for effective AWS cost Optimization.

Use Tags to Organize Resources

Tags can help you categorize your AWS resources. Tagging resources based on the owner, environment, or purpose is a great way to organize them more effectively to track costs in detail. You can enforce a tagging policy and use AWS-generated and user-defined cost allocation tags in your organization to ensure consistency as well.

Choose the right Pricing Models

AWS provides several pricing models suitable for various workloads and different business needs. Selecting the right model can significantly help in reducing costs. For predictable workloads, you can go with Reserved Instances, On-demand Instances are suitable for less predictable workloads, and Spot Instances are a great choice for fault-tolerant applications.

Don’t pay for Idle Instances

Idle instances can deplete your budget without providing value. Use AWS tools like Trusted Advisor and AWS Cost Explorer to identify these instances. Trusted Advisor’s Amazon RDS Idle DB Instances check can detect RDS instances not currently being used. Use the AWS Instance Scheduler to stop these instances and save costs.

Go for the Right EBS Volume Type

Selecting the correct Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volume type can help in optimizing cost. For workloads requiring lower performance needs businesses can use Throughput Optimized HDD (st1) instead of the default General Purpose SSD (gp2). Compared to gp2, st1 volumes are roughly half the cost.

Reduce Data Transfer Cost

The expenses of data transmission can rise rapidly, particularly when moving data from Amazon Web Services (AWS) resources to the public internet. One way to reduce these expenses is to use Amazon CloudFront, which is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) offered by AWS. CloudFront helps you save money on sending data to people online. It stores copies of your website in different places around the world, so it’s faster and cheaper to send it to people no matter where they are.

Alfred Case Study

“Alfred Achieved 85% Savings and 10x Performance Improvement with Chainlake’s Multi-Cloud Strategy.”

Optimizing cloud costs is a practical strategy that brings real benefits to businesses across different industries. Let’s look at a real-world example of how we reduced our cloud cost by 10x and improved our operations.

In today’s dynamic business landscape, the cloud has evolved from a mere buzzword into the driving force propelling us into a new era of transformation. While many companies have dipped their toes into the waters of cloud technology, only a select few have fully harnessed its transformative potential.

Recent insights from this study reveal that these cloud-powered enterprises are not merely adopting technology; they are orchestrating a paradigm shift, charting new courses, and reaping significant value. As we journey through this exploration of their strategies, we uncover four distinctive avenues that are reshaping the future of business.

Beyond Migration: A Holistic Cloud Approach

The pioneers of the cloud era understand that this isn’t just about migrating workloads or modernizing assets; it’s about orchestrating a holistic digital transformation. They’re the maestros of strategy, carefully assessing each scenario to determine the best approach for their unique goals. It’s not about rushing headlong into the cloud; it’s about thoughtful consideration of factors such as risk, customer needs, and talent availability.

They ponder the choice of retaining data or legacy applications in-house when it makes sense or exploring the boundless opportunities of managed services. These visionaries also have their sights set on industry-specific cloud solutions, complete with AI capabilities, offering a flexible starting point that ignites innovation.

C-Suite Synergy

In the world of cloud-powered businesses, collaboration knows no boundaries. It’s a symphony orchestrated by CIOs and technical teams in close partnership with departments like CHRO and talent teams. They understand the pivotal roles these cross-functional partnerships play in the successful implementation of cloud projects.

This collaborative spirit doesn’t stop at departmental doors; it extends to finance leaders, ensuring the scalability of cloud transformation projects and the creation of a unified financial model with minimal unforeseen costs. Beyond the balance sheets, these collaborations extend to the world of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) leaders, guiding the measurement of the environmental impact of cloud solutions and aligning data collection with ambitious net-zero goals.

Data Mastery and AI

Data is the lifeblood of transformation, and cloud-powered companies recognize this better than anyone. Companies don’t merely collect data; they craft comprehensive data strategies that outshine their peers who haven’t embraced the cloud as thoroughly. These strategies aren’t just pieces of paper; they are blueprints for unlocking the full potential of data.

To become data-driven, they construct streamlined data architectures, institute effective governance structures, and empower their teams with the right skill sets. With their data infrastructure in place, these companies step into the realm of machine learning and AI with confidence, embracing the power to reduce costs and accelerate processes. Cloud-based AI services aren’t mere tools; they are engines of automation, decision-making, and strategy modeling, requiring a seamless blend of business acumen and data science expertise.

Trust as a Foundation

For cloud-powered companies, security, privacy, and compliance are perpetual priorities. They don’t just pay lip service to these principles; they invest dedicated resources to ensure the safety and regulatory compliance of their cloud operations. These forward-thinkers aren’t just content with addressing today’s risks; they are pioneers in considering the risks of emerging innovation frontiers, such as the metaverse and Web3. They don’t just extend risk frameworks; they redefine them to ensure the responsible use of these cutting-edge technologies.

Today, cloud-powered companies aren’t followers of trends; they are the architects of change. By adopting a holistic approach, fostering collaboration across borders, crafting data strategies that empower, and embedding trust as a cornerstone of their operations, they’re not just rewriting the rules; they’re redefining the future.
Introduction:

In recent times, where the rapid advancements of generative AI and the fluidity of data privacy regulations continue to shape the business world, the concept of Sovereign Cloud emerges as a pivotal challenge to conquer on the journey toward unlocking value. At its core, digital sovereignty encapsulates the idea that nations should have the authority to govern digital enterprises and data activities within their borders, an idea that is gaining momentum globally.

Read this report for more information

What is a Sovereign Cloud?

Sovereign Cloud is a meticulously crafted cloud computing infrastructure tailored to align seamlessly with the unique laws and regulations of its hosting country. Within these digital bastions, data, and metadata are safeguarded in compliance with local regulations, creating a formidable bulwark against unwarranted foreign access or intrusion. It’s here that Sovereign Cloud service providers take on the vital role of vigilant guardians, meticulously monitoring client data storage to ensure unwavering adherence to localized statutes.

However, the contours of Sovereign Cloud adoption are not uniform, varying with region and nation. Governments, each with their distinct imperatives, prescribe differing standards. For instance:

Canada: Prioritizes security clearances to protect sensitive government assets, allowing access only for authorized personnel.

Australia: Enhances cybersecurity through the Infosec Registered Assessors Program (IRAP) to safeguard local industry and government data.

United States: Implements the Cloud Smart Policy, aiding federal agencies in adopting secure cloud infrastructures.

Germany: Deploys the Bundescloud, a dedicated platform for federal government data storage, consolidating IT services.

United Kingdom: Mandates Cloud First policy adoption for central departments, favoring Crown Hosting for sovereign on-premises needs.

India: Initiates MeghRaj, an ambitious cloud initiative focusing on e-service delivery acceleration, efficient application development, and infrastructure optimization.

Israel: Launched Project Nimbus, establishing a cloud services supply channel, shaping government cloud policies, and optimizing cloud-based activities.

The heart of sovereign cloud

At its core, the concept of sovereign cloud revolves around data—its ownership, trust, control, national interests, and regulatory compliance. This model ensures that all data, including metadata, stays within a nation’s borders, impervious to foreign access. It provides a secure haven for data storage and processing, safeguarding it within a single jurisdiction and unlocking its inherent value. Sovereign cloud solutions have evolved to seamlessly integrate into the multi-cloud landscape, offering advantages such as agility, security, and automation.

A piece of the puzzle

In practice, sovereign clouds should be an integral part of a broader multi-cloud strategy. Not all data is equal, and different cloud providers offer unique value propositions. Organizations must navigate the dynamic regulatory landscape by using multiple cloud solutions simultaneously, incorporating sovereign clouds into their toolkit.

Exploring approaches by cloud providers:

Major players like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) each have their own strategies for addressing cloud sovereignty:

1. AWS emphasizes user control over data location, offering tools for data storage and more. When utilizing AWS, you can:

Determine the geographical location for your workloads among 31 global regions, wielding various tools for data storage, security, and access control.

Safeguard data against unauthorized external access using specialized software and hardware, exemplified by the AWS Nitro System.

Enforce data encryption at rest or in transit, with the flexibility to manage encryption keys within or outside the AWS cloud.

Bolster cloud resilience with multiple Availability Zones (AZs) in each AWS region, ensuring continuous availability alongside a range of data resilience mechanisms in case of unforeseen disasters.

2. Azure offers “Cloud for Sovereignty,” with data residency options and more. Key features include:

Data residency options enable customers to choose specific regions for data storage and processing.

Rigorous alignment with government requirements, ensuring compliance with local policies and regulations.

Advanced sovereign controls, allow users to set security and privacy parameters, customize policy controls, and automate enforcement.

3. GCP collaborates with partners to enhance sovereign controls. Key elements of GCP’s approach encompass:

Data residency control, enables customers to store data at rest in designated GCP regions and prevent external data movement.

External management of encryption keys by GCP’s partners, necessitating external access for key management.

Stringent logging and auditing of all customer data access, restricted to predefined conditions.

Google’s Digital Sovereignty Explorer, delivering personalized reports highlighting areas requiring attention and tailored sovereignty solutions.

Challenges and considerations:

While sovereign clouds provide enhanced data security, they also introduce challenges:

Compatibility Concerns:

Moving data and applications from existing setups or different cloud providers to a sovereign cloud can lead to compatibility issues. This often means investing extra time and resources to ensure everything works seamlessly.

Balancing Governance:

While sovereign clouds aim to keep data secure, there’s a risk of government overreach and excessive surveillance. Striking a balance between data protection and government access is crucial.

Slowing Down Innovation:

Sovereign clouds, with their strict rules and regulations, can slow down the adoption of new technologies and services. This can limit an organization’s ability to quickly embrace innovation.

Data Sovereignty Complexity:

While data sovereignty in a sovereign cloud mainly deals with where data is stored and controlled, ensuring sovereignty during data transfer can be complicated. Establishing secure data transfer methods while following data protection rules is a challenging task that requires careful planning.

In conclusion:

Digital sovereignty is essential for maintaining control over digital independence and data. Sovereign clouds act as the highways that unlock the potential of data-driven economies and foster innovation. This helps in collaboration and provides open access to well-designed data hubs which are key to promoting digital ecosystems, built on principles of openness, trust, transparency, and inclusiveness.

Kubernetes has quickly gained enterprise-wide adoption, becoming the standard technique for deploying and managing cloud applications in less than five years. One of Kubernetes’ key strengths is its capacity to match computing resources with the demands of services in the prevailing infrastructure paradigm. But how does this tool function when dealing with the blockchain, a brand-new infrastructural layer? Can the two technologies coexist alongside one another? If so, would deploying blockchain networks using Kubernetes actually hasten adoption, or will this only serve to wow investors and shareholders with technical speak?

Due to three factors, Kubernetes clusters will be the foundation for blockchain networks’ adoption in both the public and private sectors.

(1) Simpler Deployments

(2) Interoperability

(3) Upgradeability

We will take a deep dive into these factors later on.

Kubernetes as a tool:

A portable, adaptable, open-source platform, Kubernetes allows for declarative setup and automation of containerized workloads and services. Its ecology is vast and expanding quickly. The tools, services, and support for K8 are widely accessible.

The management environment offered by Kubernetes is focused on containers. The processing, networking, and storage infrastructure are coordinated in support of the user workloads. The convenience of Platform as a Service (PaaS) and the flexibility of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) enables mobility between infrastructure providers.

Kubernetes Architecture Diagram

The Blockchain:

A decentralized, unchangeable, and open database is essentially what the blockchain is. Due to the peer-to-peer network architecture of blockchain technology, transaction data is not under the control of a single centralized organization. All participants in the blockchain network have trustworthy public access to all transactions stored in a chain of blocks.

Blockchain ensures that connected blocks are resistant to changes and alterations by using consensus procedures and cryptography.

How can Blockchain applications utilize Kubernetes?

Blockchain is beginning to be adopted by businesses due to its many applications, like transferring cryptocurrency, information, agro blockchain, or purchasing and selling NFTs. Due to its streamlined pod, container deployments and, Kubernetes (or K8s) can assist enterprises in implementing blockchain.

Being cloud independent in business operations enables all parties participating in a service or product to access the same data stored on a blockchain without disclosing confidential and internal information. Kubernetes can configure, install, and maintain a company’s private blockchain with less manual labor while still providing the necessary components to keep the network secure, scalable, and fail-safe because of its distributed performance and pod deployments.

Although Kubernetes aids in the deployment of blockchains, a few configurations must be made by developers manually. These include choosing a protocol image and additional components, creating YAML manifests and Helm charts, and using Helm-install to test the Blockchain technology in Kubernetes clusters before it is made available to the general public.

Kubernetes clusters are being adopted by many companies in the blockchain space due to the following factors:

Simpler Deployments:

The deployment and management of the network itself must be easy to use in order to create blockchain applications.

You must choose from a bewildering amount of options while creating a straightforward dApp on the Ethereum network: Will your main coding language be Solidity or Vyper? What development framework should you use—Truffle Suite or OpenZeppelin SDK? The sheer number of developer tools is enough to put both newbies and seasoned programmers off.

With Kubernetes, It will be simple to deploy blockchains by selecting a protocol image and the required component images, creating YAML manifests and doing so using helm install.

Interoperability:

Applications running in Kubernetes clusters are compatible with all forms of infrastructure, allowing service interoperability between enterprises with various architectural styles. The same application can be dispersed and hosted by various cloud providers.

Blockchain applications are no different in this regard. Through their respective Kubernetes engines, IBM Cloud and AWS already offer comprehensive templates for creating blockchain networks.

Upgradeability:

Helm charts offer a more subtle benefit of blockchains on Kubernetes. Organizations have the option to swiftly launch new networks with updated functionality, upgrade network artifacts, and backup/restore a network’s whole state by architecting networks using Helm charts.

Use Cases

Docker:

By utilizing Docker, each blockchain node is guaranteed to be operational and running without requiring individual virtual machines to be configured. The Docker Hub offers Hyperledger, Ethereum, and Quorum images as starting points for swiftly and securely setting up the blockchain network.

Using Docker to set up a blockchain network allows for quicker software delivery and release, saving time, effort, and money.

Microsoft and Helm:

Helm is a package manager that enables you to discover, share, and use applications created for Kubernetes. The Kubernetes package management’s Helm charts, offer a higher-level construct that enables users to create, upgrade, and roll back entire applications without managing each Kubernetes resource separately (services, deployments, etc.)

Azure Kubernetes Services (AKS) gives users the ability to customize virtual machines and the number of nodes to use Hyperledger Fabric to make blockchains fail-safe, just like any other Kubernetes Managed services.

IBM Cloud:

Businesses may deploy the development, testing, and production environments however they see fit using the IBM Blockchain Platform, which speeds up the release cycle for new blockchain technologies.

By controlling all blockchain nodes from a single dashboard and streamlining the deployment process, IBM’s Blockchain Platform enables businesses to deploy their blockchains in any cloud ecosystem, whether it be on IBM’s clouds or with another cloud service provider.

Additionally, using IBM Cloud Kubernetes Services and its current administrative technology enables developers to easily grow the ecosystems employed in a Blockchain.

Here is the guide to installing Blockchain on Kubernetes

Final Thoughts:

Even if blockchain is becoming more and more relevant every day, it has a long way to go before it is widely adopted. Its considerable complexity and integration with the current infrastructure architecture that enterprises utilize today will be one of the barriers to adoption. By using Kubernetes clusters to deploy blockchain networks and their individual components, these difficulties may be largely abstracted. But when examining significant infrastructure firms and case studies, the overall opinion points to Blockchain on Kubernetes as the preferred method for adoption.

Organizations can establish the following roles in order to successfully utilize Kubernetes in a blockchain service:

1. Kubernetes-based cloud administrator: provides and keeps an eye on the blockchain’s architecture.

2. Blockchain Administrator: uses Hyperledger Fabric to manage the blockchain platform.

3. Blockchain developer: creates the apps that are used in a blockchain.

We all know how important is security-related aspects these days. Therefore, frequent changes are needed to be made related to security in the cloud to protect our data and infrastructure.

First, let us understand what Azure sentinel is and how it works.

Azure Sentinal updates ensures security

What is Microsoft Azure sentinel?

Microsoft Sentinel is a scalable, cloud-native, security native, and data delivery tool. It delivers security analytics data of your infrastructure and also threat-related issues across the enterprise, it provides a good solution for attack detection, threat visibility, and threat response.

Some of the most common use of Azure sentinel is as follows –

1) It collects data from your infrastructure and native applications and provides a proper UI for this

2) It detects the threat and acts accordingly

3) Investigates threats with Azure AI

4) Responds to threats actively with automation acts

What are the updates in Azure sentinel-

1) New automation rules –

They have now automated run books that are built on the alert trigger. Previously this can be run only by attaching them to analytics rules on an individual basis. With this alert trigger, a single automation rule can be attached to many analytics rules. It will allow you to manage playbooks and analytics in a centralized way.

2) Integrated Data loss prevention in Microsoft sentinel –

You can view all the DLP alerts under incidents in Microsoft 365 defender incident queue. You can retain the alerts for 180 days. You can also hunt for compliance logs for the security logs under advance hunting.

3) Custom Log ingestion –

It allows you to send custom-format logs from any data source to your Log Analytics workspace, and store those logs either in certain specific standard tables or in custom-formatted tables that you create.

4) View MITRE support –

Microsoft Sentinel now provides a new MITRE page, which highlights the MITRE tactic and technique coverage you currently have, and can configure, for your organization.

Select items from the Active menus at the top of the page to view the detections currently active in your workspace, and the simulated detections available for you to configure.

5) Restore archive logs from search –

When you need to do a full investigation on data stored in archived logs, restore a table from the search page in Microsoft Sentinel. It Specifies a target table and time range for the data you want to restore. Within a few minutes, the log data is restored and available within the Log Analytics workspace.

These were the lates updates on Azure sentinal. If you want to know more about Azure DevOps and its offerings, click here.

The adoption of Kubernetes has snowballed over the last few years. Enterprises have started using Kubernetes to streamline their workloads and enhance their productivity. It is reasonable to say that K8 has the potential to offer seamless benefits to enterprises who are looking to venture into the world of the cloud.

Before we dive deeper into it, let’s understand the what and why of Kubernetes.

Kubernetes on-premise is a portable, extensible, open-source platform for managing containerized workloads and services, facilitating declarative configuration and automation. It has a large, rapidly growing ecosystem. K8’s services, support, and tools are widely available and it’s a tool that is becoming indispensable for containerization.

Kubernetes On-Premise

Despite a drastic shift towards cloud-native infrastructure, many organizations do not wish to move away from their on-prem infrastructure. However, they still want to benefit from Kubernetes to bring cloud-native features such as increased scalability, high availability, and flexibility to the on-prem workloads. It has proven to ease migration with cloud-native workloads.

On-Premises + Kubernetes

Why do organizations choose the path of running Kubernetes in their own data centers, compared to the relative “cake-walk” with public cloud providers? There are typically a few important reasons why an Enterprise may choose to invest in a Kubernetes on-premises strategy.

Here are a few of them.

1) Compliance and Data Privacy

2) Business Policy Reasons

3) Being Cloud Agnostic to Avoid Lock-in

4) Cost

Adding cloud-native functionality to your on-premises workloads can be challenging. The on-premises K8 setup requires starting from scratch. Enterprises looking to venture into this territory need a designated team of K8 experts who can set everything up.

Let’s take a look at some overarching challenges with K8.

Top 5 Challenges Running Kubernetes on-premises

Here are five notable Kubernetes challenges.

ETCD

One of the key challenges is managing highly available etcd clusters. As the etcd cluster achieves high availability by tolerating minor member failures, you need to take frequent backups to ensure business continuity in case the cluster goes down and the etcd data is lost.

Load balancing

There are two main steps involved in containerizing applications and deploying them on K8: deploying the application and exposing it to external and internal users. And as your application grows, providing it with Load Balanced access becomes essential. One of the important challenges is to make sure that load balancing is available for both your cluster master nodes and your application services running on Kubernetes.

Availability and Auto-scaling

While implementing Kubernetes on-premise, it is critical to ensure that your Kubernetes infrastructure is highly available having multiple K8 clusters, across different availability zones. Auto-scaling for the nodes of your cluster is equally essential to scape up and scale it back as per the needs.

Networking

The old-fashioned networking methods are not very much compatible with Kubernetes. Due to that, the challenges increase along with the scale of your deployment. Moreover, the networking is very specific to your data center configuration.

Monitoring

You will need to invest in tooling to monitor the health of your K8 clusters in your Kubernetes on-premise environment. If you have existing monitoring and log management tools like Datadog or Splunk, most of them have specific capabilities around Kubernetes monitoring. Or you may consider investing in an open source monitoring stack designed to help you monitor K8 clusters such as Prometheus and Grafana.

Final Thoughts

Kubernetes is not hard to implement, it is the operations that can make it hard to set up. Overall having Kubernetes on-premise is a necessity for businesses. It allows a high level of availability and flexibility which wasn’t possible in the existing infrastructures. In the future, implementing on-premises K8 will get easier opening many avenues for organizations to switch to hybrid cloud. For instance, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) offers the quickest way to start developing and deploying cloud-native apps, with built-in code-to-cloud pipelines and guardrails. Enterprises can have the freedom to manage the workloads they want to keep on-prem or on the cloud platform making it even more efficient.
